Well, that was little weird
June 26, 2006I need a little more practice if I’m going to live a life of leisure. I had a cleaning lady come in on Saturday and it was a little bit awkward. We had plenty of housekeepers when I was a child and that didn’t feel the least bit strange. However, I must admit, I was a little uncomfortable ordering around a woman who was perilously close to being old enough to be my mother. Especially since she didn’t do a fantastic job. She did okay but I think that maybe no one can clean up to my standards.
When I was little, we had more than one housekeeper that just flat out sucked. My aunt lucked up with a great housekeeper that she kept for years. We went through about three before we found one we really liked though. Maybe I should have gone with the Latina who gave me a quote last week. I suspect she would have done a way better job but then again, I don’t speak Spanish so we wouldn’t have been able to communicate. I think the adage that good help is hard to find is probably true.
I understand. I am not at all comfortable with telling our housekeeper what to do but she comes on Tuesday mornings so I have to do it. I’ve considered moving her to Saturday, so my guy can manage her, but that would restrict part of our weekend.
Our lady is Mexican and doesn’t need much instruction but one day the house was clean and I forgot to call and tell her not to come. I explained my dilemna to my mother who gave me an incredible list of things to have her do. I felt odd asking her to do all that, but I did. She was there over 4 hours as opposed to her usual 2 and I realized I had been under-utilizing her.

Easy solution….make a list ahead of time and hand it to her when she walks in the door. Then you don’t have to “manage” her. And if there was something that she didn’t do up to your standards then just tell her (nicely of course). She may not know how you like the dust to blow. LOL

I leave a very detailed list of things that I want done on my fridge, but I am usually out when the cleaning happens.

I know I’m the same way. Hard to please. Things are best when I do it myself but alas there is only one of me.
