Money advice for the ladies

October 11, 2007

While I am definitely NOT one of those women who suggests you have a secret stash and hide money from your spouse, I also am not one of those women who suggests you merge every last thing and only have joint accounts.  It is imperative that you maintain your own credit, even after marriage.  If you become widowed, you may find that all that joint credit history disappears along with your husband.

  1. I agree! I’m also not one of those women who insists fiercely on women having total financial independence…but I’m getting that way. In this day and age–when divorce is increasingly common and people are living for decades and decades longer–it’s just too risky for most women to put depend solely on their husbands for income, assets, and credit!

What happens when he dies, gets sick and can’t work, or leaves you–or if you want to leave him? Too many women stay inunhappy marriages because of financial dependence. And too many widows/divorcees end up struggling for the same reason.
