I’m focused man

January 28, 2008

I know I’ve been slacking on the blogging but I’ve got a lot on my plate in real life.  I’m still getting adjusted to being "in school" and having to study.  Not to mention, I’ve got two other things going plus ski club stuff and alumni stuff.  Hopefully things will be back on an even keel in a few weeks though.

On the bright side, it’s supposed to be 60 degrees today.  Woo hoo!  I’m tired of the winter weather.

Delta dummies!

January 19, 2008
Well I’m lounging in the Denver airport using their free wi-fi. Because of the snow in Atlanta, Delta decided to cancel all their flights today. They were ever so kind as to rebook us on a 12:55 AM flight tomorrow. Hell to the naw.  My original flight was for 1:15 pm.  There was no way I was going to chill in the airport for 12 hours or pay for a hotel room.  So now I’m booked on a Frontier flight for 1:35pm courtesy of Delta of course.  It’s funny how AirTran and Frontier are flying into ATL but not Delta.  Oh well.

Ice ice baby, too cold, too cold

January 16, 2008
When I woke up this morning, it was negative three degrees.  The high is supposed to be two degrees.  Needless to say, I will not be skiing today.  As a matter of fact, I may not even leave the resort today.  I don’t do frigid.  LOL.  We’re having lots of fun though.  I reconnected with some of the folks I met and skiied with in Argentina so that was nice.  Now hubby can go off on his double blacks and I can stick to my blue-blacks.  Of course, the week is passing by much too fast.  Unfortunately, we’ll be back home in a few short days.

Making the news

January 13, 2008

Well, we’re here in snowy Breckenridge.  From what I’ve seen of the town so far, it’s very quaint with lots of shops and restaurants.  I decided to take the morning off to acclimate to the altitude. I’m a bit puzzled though because the last two times I came to Colorado, I didn’t have any issues.  And Copper Mountain is definitely at a higher altitude than here.  Such is life though.

There were a gang of "us" in the airport yesterday as this is a pretty big event.  So of course the news cameras were out.  Call me crazy but I didn’t think it was particularly newsworthy but apparently the media disagrees.  But on a positive note, because this is so newsworthy, the city and/or resort want to do a publicity/lifestyle shoot.  And yours truly has been asked to be one of the models.  Now I’m regretting not really packing any makeup.  My usual "face" of eyeliner, mascara and lipgloss will have to do.  I will be compensated though so that’s nice.  This is the second trip where I’ve been asked to be a "pretty face".  I won’t pretend I’m not flattered…and the money doesn’t hurt either.  Last year, I was asked to be a spokesmodel, or whatever you call it, for a liquor company at a happy hour.  While getting paid to pass out free liquor wasn’t a bad deal, I definitely have a new respect for cocktail waitresses.  I don’t know how they do it.

But enough about that.  If you haven’t seen The Great Debaters, you should.  It is a FABULOUS movie.  I almost want to go see it again.  Have a great week and I’m off to the slopes.

Un momento por favor

We’re off to the slopes.

Free financial advice

January 9, 2008

It’s that time of year again.  Kiplinger’s personal finance magazine has set up a hotline that you can call for free financial advice.

From 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. eastern time on Tuesday, January 15, and Friday, January 25, NAPFA members across the U.S. will be standing by to answer your questions.

Normally, these fee-only planners, who are well versed in investments, taxes, insurance, estate planning, and saving for college and retirement, charge clients $100 to $250 an hour.  But on Jump-Start Days, you don’t pay a cent - not even for the phone call.  Just dial 888-919-2345 and a NAPFA adviser will respond to your question.  Or, if you prefer, you can participate in an online discussion with a NAPFA adviser anytime from 9 A.M. to 6 P.M. eastern time on January 15 or January 25.

To make the most of your financial checkup, gather together any relevant records, such as mutual fund statements or your 401(k) menu of investment choices.  If your questions are too complex to be answered on the spot, you may be directed to NAPFA’s Web site, www.napfa.org, where you can look for a planner in your area.

Be sure to call.  Now you have NO excuse for not getting your money right this year!

Wake up call

January 8, 2008

My dad called my cell early this morning.  At first I thought it might have been hubby calling to give me a traffic report but when I saw the caller ID, my heart sank a little.  I knew it had to be bad news.  Late night/early morning calls always mean bad news.  I answered the phone praying nothing had happened to either of my brothers.

My dad made a little small talk, delaying the inevitable, but I was afraid to ask him to get on with it.  As expected, there was a death in our family.  Thankfully, it wasn’t either of my brothers but a young life lost nonetheless.  I had just seen this particular family member when I went home for Christmas and my dad just saw him last night, literally hours before his death.  Now a family is left to mourn.  He had a two year old child and a baby on the way.  Now they will grow up without their father because of a senseless act.

iPhone Games

January 6, 2008

Hey Bloggers. Jez Chill here. I know, I haven’t blogged since OJ wore Isotoners. But I’m back to say a few words.

My co-workers have been working on their websites for years, and they are not bringing in big bucks. Hmmm, making money while you sleep sounds good to me! So I’m going to jump in and try to do the same.

Do you have an Apple iPhone?  Know anyone that does?   If the answer is yes to either, then the link below must be shared and bookmarked.  It’s a complete list of every FREE game that is designed for the iPhone. I even took a picture of my own thumb to give it a thumbs up or thumbs down rating.  I’m about a week or two away from rating all of the sites, but all the games are still listed.

Yawn

January 2, 2008

I hope everyone rang in the new year well.  Hubby and I spent NYE snuggled up on the sofa in front of the fireplace.  We had cocktails and watched the peach drop from the comfort of home.

I’m back in the office.  I didn’t want to waste any vacation days taking off the rest of the week like most of my coworkers.  I prefer to use my vacation days for actual vacations.  Speaking of vacations, I just found out the place we’re staying at on our ski trip does NOT have free wireless internet.  What kind of backwoods cave is that?  Surely they don’t expect me to pay for internet and then daily?!  Sigh.

Hubby was up at o’dark thirty this morning.  The man is certainly dedicated.  It’s definitely good when you enjoy what you do.  I decided to go ahead and get up as well because if I’m still asleep when he leaves the house, he has to call to make sure I get up.  I don’t know how I ever made it to work without him.  I sure am sleepy though.  I guess I should have gone to bed prior to 1am.  However, that was early compared to the times I’ve been going to bed for the past week and a half.

My cousin and her hubby are supposed to be coming to town for a few days so that will be nice.  We never get to spend any time with them.  I was in Cali then they moved to MI.  Her hubby is hoping to get a job in the area so they can both be closer to home.  Not to mention, my cousin absolutes hate MI.

We finally hung the living room curtains but now I don’t like how they look.  I think I need a longer length.  I still have the receipt BUT I threw away the packaging…in the kitchen trash.  Ugh!  Looks like I may be digging through the garbage tonight.  I would ask hubby but he has something to do after work and it will be too cold to be outside afterwards.  Actually, it’s too cold to be outside at all.  It was 22 degrees when I left the house this morning and the high is only 34 degrees.  Looks like I’ll be putting on my PJs and making hot cocoa when I get home.
